A Deer, a Dead Car, and the End of the $1,200 Power Bill

Every big change starts somewhere, and usually the starting point is mundane. A bill arrives. A water heater fails. A neighbor mentions something over the fence. For one of our customers here in Humboldt County, the starting point was stranger than most. It was a deer, clearing a cement wall on Highway 101, two days before Christmas.
She was driving home from a Christmas party in December 2024 when the deer appeared in front of her car. There was no time to react, and she knew better than to slam on the brakes. She kept the car moving, worked her way across the lanes, and coasted up onto the Loleta overpass before the engine died for good.
Most people would call that a bad night. She decided to call it a sign. Maybe, she joked, that was one of Santa's reindeer, and he wanted her to get a really good toy for Christmas. So she bought a Tesla.
The bill that changes the math
Here is where the story stops being about a car and starts being about a house.
Like a lot of Humboldt homeowners, she was paying PG&E around 50 cents per kilowatt hour for nearly every kilowatt she used. Her house is 2,200 square feet, and her first winter in it, her highest monthly bill came to more than $1,200. That figure deserves a moment to sink in. In much of the country, $1,200 a month covers rent or a mortgage payment. Here, it can be what it costs just to keep the lights on and the house warm.
Buying an EV pushed her to sign up for PG&E's EV rate plan, and the fine print of that plan tells you a lot about how modern electricity pricing works. Her rate dropped to 31 cents per kilowatt hour between midnight and 3 p.m. Then it climbed to 48 cents from 3 to 4, peaked at 65 cents from 4 to 9, and settled back to 48 cents until midnight, when the cycle started over.
Time-of-use rates like these reward you for charging a car overnight. But your refrigerator does not care what time it is. Neither does your heater on a cold January evening, which happens to fall squarely inside that 65 cent peak window. She could shift her car charging. She could not shift her life. The math of her house was still broken, and she knew it. As she put it, this was not a sustainable home to retire in. The cost had to be fixed.
Trying one more time
She had been down the solar road before, and it had left her wary. What changed her mind was less a sales pitch than a proof of concept. The person she sat down with from our team turned out to be her neighbor, close enough that he could pull up his own production numbers from his own roof, on the same weather, under the same fog. She saw what his system was actually generating a short distance from her front door, and decided to try one more time.
The timeline from there moved quickly. They first talked in June. Panels were on the roof by August. The system was plugged in on September 4th, in time to capture the 30 percent federal tax credit. Her accounting of that credit is my favorite line in the whole conversation: it bought her second Tesla. As she sees it, the car came free with the bundle.
Building for the future, not the past
The most interesting decision in her project happened at the kitchen table, before a single panel went up. Sizing a solar system to match last year's usage is easy. The better question is what your usage will look like five years from now. So she overbuilt.
Then she went further. She pulled out her natural gas furnace entirely and replaced it with a five-zone heat pump system, with a unit in each bedroom. Heating 2,200 square feet all at once takes a lot of natural gas. Zoned heat pumps let her microclimate the house instead. If she is going to spend the evening in one room, that room gets cozy, and the rest of the house is left alone. Her gas furnace is gone. Two EVs charge in the driveway. The whole home now runs on electrons, most of them made on her own roof.
The number that tells the story
Last winter, before her system even had permission to operate at full benefit, her highest PG&E bill was $179.
From $1,200 to $179. Same house, same square footage, same Humboldt winter. The difference is a roof that produces power, a heating system designed for how she actually lives, and a plan built around where her energy use is headed rather than where it has been.
She describes the whole journey, from the deer to energy independence, as an angel sitting on her shoulder. We would add that angels help, but good design does most of the heavy lifting.
